Assignment of Students to Schools
Update July, 2021
TCRCE thanks all those who submitted their feedback. We have reviewed the information and have contacted respondents individually. In an effort to gather as much feedback as possible, we reached out to all families with students at schools where there could be possible changes. However, the actual number of people who reside in the areas in question is quite low. A TCRCE staff member will be reaching out those individuals directly.
The intention is to make a change for future students as current students may be grandfathered in and remain at the schools they currently attend. As well, siblings who would attend the same school may stay together.
If you believe you are in an impacted area and do not receive a call before the start of the 2021-22 school year, please contact us at feedback@tcrce.ca.
Update May, 2021
There are currently a small number of areas within the Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) where families and school staff have questions as to which school students should attend. In some cases, students are attending a school that’s located further from their closest community school. This means they travel on the bus for longer than necessary and could be attending a different school than their neighbours. It is important students attend the school that makes the most sense geographically, while reducing travel time and balancing class sizes.
TCRCE is looking for your input as we examine opportunities to clarify unclear border areas within the following school areas (a detailed boundary list is included at the bottom of this page):
· Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School and Maple Grove Education Centre
· St. Mary’s Bay Academy and Digby Regional High School
· St. Mary’s Bay Academy and Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School
· Digby Elementary School and Weymouth Consolidated School
· Weymouth Consolidated School and Port Maitland Consolidated Elementary School
What could change?
Current students will not need to change schools. The change may impact future students.
Students may be grandfathered in and remain at the schools they currently attend. As well, siblings who would attend the same school may stay together. Upon graduation from an Elementary School, those students could attend a Junior High in the “new” adjacent community school.
What’s the benefit?
- Have students attend schools located in their communities
- Improve transportation routes
- Balance class sizes
Have feedback?
Do you live in one of the school catchment areas listed below? We understand assigning future students to different schools may have an impact on families in these communities and it’s important we gather feedback to determine how best to move forward.
We want to hear your thoughts on how to make this process as smooth as possible. Please send your feedback to feedback@tcrce.ca before June 11, 2021.
Next steps?
We are committed to keeping you informed. We will work with School Advisory Councils to share information and keep our communities updated through our website, social media, and regional updates.
