On Tuesday, May 17, selected Grade 11 students from across Nova Scotia attended the Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal ceremony in Halifax.
The Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal is awarded each year and open to Grade 11 high school students. Students are nominated by their school, based on academic performance and qualities of leadership and service demonstrated in their school and community.

Here are the TCRCE 2021-2022 medal recipients:
Maryam Al Zahabi – Shelburne Regional High School
Maryam is a determined young woman who is active in both school and community. Maryam began volunteering while living in Quebec and has continued to share her time and energy with the people of Shelburne. She has volunteered with various organizations such as the Anglican Church, the Volunteer Fire Department, the Town of Shelburne, and the local sailing school. In addition, she has displayed leadership as the secretary for SRHS student council, NSISP ambassador, captain of the soccer team, curling team, volleyball team, and badminton team. Maryam’s dedication and commitment to soccer earned her MVP status during the 2019-2020, and 2021 seasons. Maryam is also a wonderful student and has consistently maintained 90% + average. She displays a positive attitude, encourages her peers, and continuously strives to do her best.
Cameron Edward Brown – Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School
Cameron is a committed student who is excelling in the demanding International Baccalaureate diploma program at Yarmouth High. He is bright, capable, and committed to this academic challenge. Cameron has a warm, caring personality with a wonderful sense of humor and ability to engage with people of all ages. Involved with sports since a young age, Cameron is a well-rounded athlete who excels at a multitude of sports including Varsity and community soccer, Varsity and Rep hockey and Varsity badminton. Cameron participates in theme days and school events. His leadership skills make him a positive role model for students, fellow players and younger athletes. Currently Cameron is organizing and leading our popular noon hour Intramural program. Despite being very busy with all of his interests and commitments, Cameron regularly volunteers at many events and is a valued part-time employee at Cleves. Family is very important to Cameron, and he spends a lot of time with his family, grandparents and relatives. He is a true gentleman, always considerate and kind to others. Teachers note the genuine kindness and acceptance he demonstrates in the classroom, through athletics and in the community. Cameron is an outstanding young man with an enormous heart who is genuinely committed to making a difference in his school and community.
Kevin Andrew Cotter – Lockeport Regional High School
Kevin has been on the Greenwave honour roll list since entering high school. He is an energetic student athlete taking home the Ron O’Flaherty scholar athlete, NSSAF Good Sport, and Canada’s History Young Citizen awards. Kevin is active in soccer, basketball and baseball, not only as an athlete but as a volunteer as well. Kevin can be called upon to help out when setting up for events in school and in the community while maintaining second place standing in his class.
Autumn Cromwell – Digby Regional High School
Autumn has been an active volunteer in both school and the local community. She has participated in badminton, softball, and has been co-captain of the DRHS basketball team. She has volunteered her time with the Art Club, Garden Club, School Plus Advisory Committee, Tideview Terrace, Peer Tutor Program, and has helped with organizing the Remembrance Day ceremonies. As a budding leader, Autumn has participated in the Horizons and a NSSSA Leadership Conferences. She maintains a very high academic average alongside all of her volunteer work. Autumn shows initiative and is always willing to help.
Caelan Brad Deviller – Drumlin Heights Consolidated School
Caelan is a Grade 11 student with a high academic standing. He enjoys Drumlin’s Options and Opportunities Program where he finished his first Co-Op Placement at Villa St. Joseph du Lac Residential Care Facility. Caelan enjoys contributing to school-spirit and serving as representative on the Student Council since Grade 6. As a 4-H, 8-year exemplar, Caelan has received awards for public speaking, junior ambassador, top junior, project awards, and represented Nova Scotia at 3 National 4-H Science Fairs. He has even attended two Canada Wide Science Fairs representing 4-H Canada. He has completed the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, and participates on school track, badminton, cross country, basketball and soccer teams.
Gavin MacAllister MacClure Harlow – Lockeport Regional High School
Gavin is an active volunteer in his school and community. He can be found in the school canteen or setting up the breakfast club, you might even catch him doing the annual highway clean up. Gavin is very active in sports participating in soccer and track for his school and leading his hockey team on the ice. Gavin also has an entrepreneurial side; he owns and operates a kindling business with his brother and is also the sole proprietorship of his wood clearing business. Gavin does this while achieving a third place standing in his class.
Janaya Laura-Lynn Hiltz – Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School
Janaya is a top ranked student who has been recognized for academic excellence throughout school. This outstanding student athlete is leading her Options and Opportunities class at Yarmouth High. She is bright, capable, and committed to this interesting academic program. Janaya is a multitalented, enthusiastic, dedicated, and competitive athlete who excels at basketball, soccer, badminton, cross-country, softball and track. At the end of Grade 9, Janaya was selected as the Provincial winner of the Ron O’Flaherty Scholar Athlete award. She has also been a valuable member on rep basketball teams since Grade 4 and has been participating and excelling in community running events for many years. At school, Janaya has been extensively involved with Yearbook Committee, Healthy Promoting Schools, SPIRIT and Viking Vibes. She has volunteered at an elementary breakfast program and a variety of charity fundraising events. Janaya also volunteers weekly with the children church ministry program and as a summer leader at Camp Peniel. Despite the demands of the O2 program and her very busy athletic and community involvement, Janaya participates in school theme days and helps organize events. She is a natural leader and positive role model with a wonderful personality who is highly respected.
Eden Harlow Nickerson – Barrington Municipal High School
Eden is an extremely well-rounded student with excellent academic standing. Eden has been involved in the BMHS Student Council for many years and currently holds the position of Vice President. She is a natural leader and demonstrates ongoing commitment to improving her school community by speaking on behalf of her peers and organizing school spirit events. As an active member of the BMHS badminton and softball teams, Eden was awarded the Ron O’Flaherty Scholar Athlete Award for academic achievement and sportsmanship. Eden has a strong passion for helping others and wishes to pursue her future studies in the field of psychology.
Gracie Gail Nickerson – Drumlin Heights Consolidated School
Gracie is a Grade 11 high honors academic student who is currently enrolled in Drumlin’s Options and Opportunities program. Gracie completed her first Co-op placement in one of her school’s Grade 5 classrooms where she demonstrated strong leadership skills and compassion for her fellow students. Gracie is an active member of her school’s student council. She has also been a student representative for Drumlin’s Student Advisory Council for two years. As a school international student ambassador, Gracie enjoys meeting new people, helping others, and going on adventures with her friends – all while discovering new cultures, learning about different ways of life, experiencing new languages, and making lifelong friendships.
Ava Grace O’Neil – Digby Regional High School
Ava has an impressive amount of community and school-based extra-curricular activities. She has participated in the DRHS soccer and basketball teams as well as training to be a soccer referee. Ava is involved with the Schools Plus Advisory Committee, Yearbook Committee, and has obtained the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Bronze Award that requires 60 hours of volunteer and leadership service. She is currently working on the Silver Award. Ava demonstrated initiative and leadership when the Digby Area Skating Club was in jeopardy of closing due to a coach shortage. Ava took it upon herself to train as a skating coach and put forth approximately 70 hours of her own time to revive the skating club! On top of all this volunteer work, Ava keeps a very high academic average and has received numerous academic awards.
Haley Kathleen Ryan– St. Mary’s Bay Academy
Haley is a Grade 11 student at Saint Mary’s Bay Academy. She is a previous participant at the Catapult Leadership Camp. Haley plays for the Crossfires Volleyball Club and has been team captain for two years. She has played baseball where she won MVP in the championship game. She is also participating in track & field and helping and encouraging younger students. Haley has been active in her community through her Church youth group helping people by cleaning lawns, building decks, packing wood, baking goods for food baskets, writing thank you notes, and assisting in a nursing home. Haley is a member of Student Council where she has helped with various activities such as reading a poem for Remembrance Day and being part of the fashion show during our African Nova Scotian Cultural Festival. Haley also works part-time and has become a trainer of new hires in a short period of time.
Quade Alexander Shand – Barrington Municipal High School
Quade is an outstanding French Immersion student who has demonstrated excellent leadership through both academics and athletics. He has been a long-standing member of the BMHS Jr/Sr boys hockey, soccer and baseball teams, and has received numerous awards and recognition for his academic achievements and athleticism, including the Ron O’Flaherty Scholar Athlete Award. Quade leads by example in how he conducts himself within our school and community and has participated in many charitable events with his school teams. Quade has a passion for building and mathematics, and he wishes to pursue a degree in engineering.
Josiah Wyat Thibideau – St. Mary’s Bay Academy
Josiah is a Grade 11 Options and Opportunities student at Saint Mary’s Bay Academy. He has been involved in sports throughout his high school life. Josiah has played basketball since Grade 8. In Grade 9, he was captain of the junior boys basketball B team and has been a member of the senior high team for the last two years. Josiah has also played softball since Grade 7. He received the most improved player for this sport in Grade 9 and the most dedicated in Grade 10. Josiah is an active member of his Church and has helped others by mowing lawns and shoveling snow. He also volunteers in the nursery of his Church and helps out with the services. In his community, Josiah has helped others by doing firewood, mowing lawns and whipper-snipping. Josiah volunteers as a camp counselor at the local camp called JCP.
Elijah Cossaboom Webster – Islands Consolidated School
Elijah has been an active member of student council since 2017. He participates in Oasis Youth group, playing a leadership role and last summer he worked as the Tiverton Visitor Informational Centre Regional Ambassador. While maintaining high interest in extracurricular activities, Elijah also manages to keep his academic achievements high, earning honors since Grade seven.
Kailey Dawn Wolkins – Shelburne Regional High School
Kailey is a dedicated student who has been very active in both school and community. Kailey has maintained a 90% + average throughout her high school career. In addition, she has been very involved in athletics as an active member of SRHS curling, cross country, badminton, soccer and track field teams. Kailey’s community involvement is varied; she has assisted with a hospital support rally, volunteered within the school, the O2 program, and acting as an ambassador for the NSISP program. Her most dedicated role is acting as Youth Representative on the Community Health Board. This role affords her the opportunity to have an active role in attending meetings, editing podcasts, selecting and distributing wellness grants and offering ideas she believes may positively impact her community. Kailey is friendly and compassionate and seeks opportunities to support her peers and community.
